Aged Surfaces, Modern Form

Dining Room • Ashjar E1, Ashjar, Al Barari, Dubai, UAE
This light-filled room now dialogues with time. New additions show the beauty of transformation and age. Each element acts as a footnote, explaining rich character materials develop over years. Key walls feature a limewash finish, softening original starkness. Unlacquered brass accents sit adjacent to existing elements, explaining oxidation. Full-grain saddle leather upholstery develops a rich, lived-in character.
This room makes time visible through its materials.
Design Philosophy
This design integrates materials that age visibly. It embraces the "Patina as Design" framework. New elements sit next to existing ones, following "Apposition Rhetoric." This highlights the inherent character materials develop over time.
Spatial Narrative
Eyes first go to the expansive views outside. Then, the built-in shelving anchors one wall. A hand-knotted runner guides movement through the open living area to the new leather sectional.
Light Study
Morning light floods the space from extensive glazing, creating bright, even illumination. As evening falls, copper-shaded sconces cast soft, warm light, highlighting textured walls. This shifts the mood from open clarity to intimate warmth.
Living Vignette
A hand rests on the saddle leather sofa, feeling its evolving texture. Sunlight catches the limewash wall, revealing its subtle depth.
Material Palette
Limewash paint: It feels breathable and matte, softening the wall's surface with subtle texture. Unlacquered brass: It naturally darkens, developing a unique patina that explains oxidation. Full-grain saddle leather: It develops a rich, lived-in character over time, explaining comfort and history.
