Challenge Perception. Re-calibrate Senses.

Living Room Alt Angle • Ashjar E1, Ashjar, Al Barari, Dubai, UAE
An oversized, irregularly shaped acoustic panel covers the main wall. This rough, industrial felt installation muffles sound, creating a deliberate acoustic shift. A programmable scent system releases unconventional profiles: ozone, damp earth, burnt cedar. Specific seating areas feature thermal islands. Radiant heating or cooling underneath alters temperature underfoot. Rough-hewn wood and textured concrete replace smooth shelving. Coarse jute upholstery contrasts with cool, polished stone tables. Hidden emitters periodically create low-frequency hums.
This room demands your senses re-learn how to perceive.
Design Philosophy
This design employs Perceptual Disruption. It challenges ingrained sensory habits through deliberate discord. Olfactory Topographies define distinct scent zones. The space demands active perception and re-calibration.
Spatial Narrative
Your eye is drawn immediately to the massive, rough felt panel on the main wall. Walking towards the seating area, a shift in air temperature signals a thermal zone. You settle into a jute-covered seat, feeling the cool, polished stone table nearby.
Light Study
Morning light from expansive windows casts long shadows across the textured feature wall. The rough surfaces absorb some direct light, creating pockets of deeper tone. In the evening, ambient light catches the uneven concrete shelving, highlighting its tactile quality.
Living Vignette
A subtle metallic tang drifts near the window. Bare feet on the floor detect a sudden, gentle warmth underfoot.
Material Palette
Industrial Acoustic Felt: It feels rough and fibrous, dramatically absorbing sound; its form remains stable over time. Sandblasted Dark Wood: This wood surface is coarse and splintered to the touch, darkening subtly as it ages. Heavy Jute: The fibers are stiff and unyielding initially, slowly softening with sustained use.
