Monochrome Depth, Textured Grey Spaces

Living Room Alt Angle • Ashjar E1, Ashjar, Al Barari, Dubai, UAE
The room transforms into a study in singular color. Large format matte charcoal tiles replace the original light floor, setting a uniform, deep base. The media wall is resurfaced with varied dark grey textures, combining polished plaster, ribbed panels, and brushed gunmetal. Highly polished elements now contrast with matte finishes. Recessed linear lighting accentuates these new surfaces rather than broadly illuminating the space. A sculptural, dark grey fabric screen subtly defines distinct zones. Furniture in varied grey fabrics and finishes like smoked glass and blackened steel completes the monochromatic story.
This room reveals material depth through a single color.
Design Philosophy
This design explores material depth within a singular color story. Minimalist geometry shapes the overall room layout and core elements. Textural interplay defines each individual surface and furniture piece. Every element forces a closer examination of its unique finish and form.
Spatial Narrative
The eye first lands on the multi-textured media wall. One walks across the uniform, matte charcoal floor to the seating area. The deep pile, mottled rug grounds the space and invites relaxation.
Light Study
Morning light streams through expansive windows, revealing sharp reflections on polished surfaces. Recessed linear LEDs graze the walls, highlighting material textures as daylight fades. The intentional lighting emphasizes the room's monochrome depths after sunset.
Living Vignette
A hand traces the subtle ribs of the acoustic paneling on the media wall. The deep pile rug absorbs ambient sound from outside the large windows.
Material Palette
Large format matte charcoal porcelain tiles: These tiles feel smooth and cool underfoot. They resist wear and maintain their deep color indefinitely. Polished charcoal plaster: This wall surface feels hard and cool to the touch. It develops subtle shifts in reflection over time. Wool bouclé: This fabric is soft and textured. It retains its structure and warmth.
