Worn Layers: Authentic Dining Room

Dining Room • 3110 Benedict Canyon Dr, Beverly Hills, CA 90210
The existing elaborate chandelier is replaced. A minimalist, horizontal unlacquered brass fixture now hangs above the table. The fireplace surround is re-clad in large, rough-hewn limestone blocks. New dining chairs feature warm, natural saddle leather. Walls are finished with limewash paint. This provides a soft, evolving texture. A hand-knotted, low-pile wool rug grounds the space. Heavy linen drapes replace sheer curtains, adding depth.
This room becomes more beautiful with time and touch.
Design Philosophy
This design follows Material Storytelling. Each surface tells a part of its history. A Living Finish Palette guides material selection. Materials are chosen for their ability to age gracefully and gain character.
Spatial Narrative
The eye first lands on the new linear brass light fixture. It then moves to the robust aged limestone fireplace. Finally, it settles on the hand-knotted rug, absorbing its tactile texture.
Light Study
Morning light washes the limewash walls, revealing their subtle variations. Evening brings focused light from the linear fixture, highlighting the table and its surroundings. Shadows deepen, emphasizing material textures.
Living Vignette
A hand traces the warm, softened saddle leather of a dining chair. The sound of plates on the substantial table fills the quiet room.
Material Palette
Unlacquered brass: This metal feels solid and develops a rich, dark patina with time. Saddle leather: This firm leather softens with use and deepens in color over years. Limewash paint: This wall finish feels matte and reveals subtle, shifting textures in varying light. Aged limestone: This stone feels rough and its natural contours become more defined with age.
