Scaled Forms: Kitchen Reimagined

Kitchen • 4000 Ballina Dr, Encino, CA 91436
This kitchen challenges expected dimensions. A colossal bronze dome light hangs over the island, creating a singular focal point. Miniature stools beneath it shift the scale, making the island feel vast. Deeply recessed display niches reframe everyday items. A towering, framed mirror distorts wall proportions. The room systematically presents elements whose sizes are deliberately off-kilter.
This room forces a re-evaluation of expected sizes.
Design Philosophy
This design utilizes Deconstructivist Order. It systematically presents elements with altered proportions. Formal Inversion forces a re-evaluation of expected sizes. The room works by making the familiar unsettling.
Spatial Narrative
Your eye immediately goes to the massive pendant light over the island. You move past the miniature stools, drawn to the exaggerated mirror frame. The path leads to deeply recessed niches, each a small world.
Light Study
Morning sun from the east sharply highlights the mirror's rough frame. By evening, the central pendant casts a singular, soft glow, emphasizing the island's scale. Light catches the varied linings of the display cubbies, creating small pools of brilliance.
Living Vignette
You reach for a glass under the imposing bronze dome. The tiny stool makes reaching the counter feel like a stretch.
Material Palette
Honed concrete: It feels cool and smooth, developing a subtle patina over time. Bronze: This material is heavy, reflects warmth, and darkens with age. Dark stained wood: It appears rich and solid, gaining character through continuous use.
