Perception Shifts Room Scale

Bathroom • 4048 Farmouth Dr, Los Angeles, CA 90027
Dark charcoal paint covers the ceiling and upper walls. This creates a low, intimate compression. Light grey tiles on the lower walls and floor suggest an expansive ground plane. This contrast plays with the room's perceived size. A large, frameless mirror extends almost floor-to-ceiling. It visually deepens the space. Downward-focused lighting creates intimacy at the vanity. Hidden cove lighting along the top edges releases the upper zone.
This room manipulates your perception of its size.
Design Philosophy
Depth Play challenges the room's actual scale. It employs Perceptual Shift to create dynamic visual contrasts. Zoned Experience defines distinct areas of compression and release. Dark, light-absorbing surfaces feel contained. Reflective, light surfaces expand the view.
Spatial Narrative
The eye first registers the deep, dark upper walls and ceiling. Your gaze then drops to the light, continuous floor and lower walls. The large mirror reflects this light ground plane, pulling the space visually deeper.
Light Study
Morning light is diffused, making the light floor appear expansive. It gently illuminates the mirror. Evening light from above the vanity defines a compressed, intimate zone. Hidden cove lighting softly outlines the expanded upper perimeter.
Living Vignette
You reach for the faucet, your hands caught in a defined pool of light. The oversized mirror reflects your figure, appearing within an unexpected depth.
Material Palette
Matte charcoal paint: It feels velvety and absorbs light, deepening over time with slight burnishing. Light grey porcelain tiles: These feel smooth and cool underfoot, maintaining their finish with heavy use.
