Living Room • 772 8th Ave, Unit 1, San Francisco, CA 94118
The walls are now painted a deep, moody indigo. Floor-to-ceiling bookshelves line one wall, filled with books and collected objects. A vintage leather sofa anchors the room, inviting long visits.
Multiple rugs layer underfoot, defining distinct areas within the space. Warm lighting from amber bulbs casts a soft glow. Artifacts and framed prints tell a visible story across the room.
This room gathers stories and holds them visible.
Design Philosophy
This room functions as a personal museum, holding objects that reflect a unique story. The design embraces a Narrative Space, where each piece contributes to an unfolding journey. A Phenomenological approach shapes the environment, making discovery and wonder central to the experience. Imperfection and the richness of experience are celebrated throughout.
Spatial Narrative
Your eye first travels to the wall of books, drawn by the multitude of forms and textures. It then settles on the deep leather sofa, inviting you to sit. This arrangement grounds the space, encouraging deep contemplation.
Light Study
Morning sunlight floods the room through the large windows, illuminating dust motes and highlighting the rich textures of the rugs. In the evening, amber-bulbed lamps cast a soft, embracing glow, creating intimate pools of light. This shift in light dramatically changes the room's character from open to enclosed.
Living Vignette
Dust motes dance in a shaft of morning sun above an open book. The weight of worn leather settles comfortably as the room slowly wakes.
Material Palette
Deep indigo paint: It creates a matte, intimate depth that absorbs light and ages with subtle variations.
Vintage leather: This material feels supple, gaining character and a soft sheen with years of use.
Dark stained wood: It provides a weighty, grounded presence, developing a rich patina over time.
