Dining Room • 1 Sutton Pl S Unit 4CD, New York, NY 10022
A dominant, dark concrete sculptural wall now defines the left side of the room. The dining table and rug shift dramatically off-center towards the window, creating a significant open area on one side. A low, stark credenza replaces the previous console, mirroring the sculptural wall's material. Heavy, dark drapes now cover all windows.
This new arrangement uses asymmetric balance to create distinct spatial tension. The imposing wall element demands immediate visual attention. The off-center table redefines the room's core, forcing a different relationship between the objects. This design challenges expected proportions.
This room makes imbalance its primary statement.
Design Philosophy
This design employs Asymmetric balance to intentionally disrupt equilibrium. A looming sculptural element establishes Cataplexis, creating a compelling tension. This deliberate imbalance redefines the room's inherent weight. The arrangement forces a new understanding of spatial dynamics.
Spatial Narrative
Your eye immediately finds the massive dark concrete wall on the left. You walk around the off-center dining table, drawn towards the expansive void. You sit at the table, now aware of the room's new, unbalanced core.
Light Study
Morning light from the window illuminates the credenza, casting long shadows from the drapes. Evening brings a focused overhead light, highlighting the texture of the sculptural wall. The room remains subdued, emphasizing mass and shadow in all conditions.
Living Vignette
Someone pulls back a heavy drape to glimpse the street below. A hand rests on the cool, rough surface of the concrete wall during a quiet conversation.
Material Palette
Raw Concrete: This material feels cool and unyielding; it gains character from natural imperfections over time.
Dark Stained Wood: The wood is smooth and solid to the touch; it develops a subtle sheen with age.
Heavy Charcoal Linen: The linen feels substantial and slightly coarse; it softens and drapes more fluidly over time.
