A lowered ceiling and darker paint create an intimate fireplace nook. This compressed zone offers a distinct reading area. Lighter colors and reflective surfaces define the main room. This maximizes perceived volume and openness.
Circulation funnels through a narrower entry into an airy expanse. Substantial, cozy furniture fills the compressed zone. Lighter, sculptural forms furnish the released areas. Lighting varies from soft in the nook to bright in open areas.
This room controls volume and light to define distinct living experiences.
Design Philosophy
This design uses Spatial Contouring to define distinct zones. Volume Articulation shifts the room's perceived size. A lowered ceiling section creates intimacy near the fireplace. Expansive light colors and reflective surfaces open the main room.
Spatial Narrative
Your eye is drawn through the narrower entry towards the bright, expansive main room. You walk past lighter, sculptural furniture into this airy space. Or, you turn towards the intimate fireplace nook, settling into substantial, cozy seating.
Light Study
Morning light floods the main room, reflecting off pale surfaces and the large mirror. The nook remains softly illuminated by low-level task light. In the evening, bright ambient light fills open areas, while dimmable sconces provide warm, intimate glow in the nook.
Living Vignette
A book rests open on the arm of a dark upholstered chair. The main room's concealed LEDs cast a soft, even light.
