Formal Living Room • 1 W 72nd St #56, New York, NY 10023
A massive sculptural fixture dominates the room's center. Polished chrome and alabaster declare its grandeur. Concealed LED strips wash the ceiling and upper walls with a brilliant, even glow. Spotlights intensely highlight specific large artworks, making them pop.
Motorized midnight blue velvet drapes control all natural light. Retracted, they reveal a flood of outdoor light. Integrated backlighting on furniture creates a halo effect. Matte dark walls absorb light, deepening strategic shadows. A plush silver-grey rug brightens the floor plane.
This room directs light to create an undeniable, focused drama.
Design Philosophy
This design executes a narrative of controlled brilliance. Theatrical Illumination uses light as a primary architectural element. Dynamic Volume is achieved through extreme contrasts of bright and dark. Every ray of light and every shadow holds intentional purpose.
Spatial Narrative
Your eye first captures the oversized central light fixture, drawing focus upwards. You walk towards the highlighted abstract artwork, which pulls you further into the room's depth. The seating areas are defined by specific light and shadow, inviting a deliberate repose.
Light Study
Morning light streams in, controlled by the retracted drapes, a sudden, bright wash. As evening falls, motorized drapes close, creating an absolute darkness. The room then glows with intentional artificial light, spotlighting art against deep, dramatic shadows.
Living Vignette
The conversation pauses as a hidden spotlight illuminates a detail on the artwork. A hand reaches for a book, caught in the halo of a console's integrated backlighting.
