Formal Living Room • 1 W 72nd St #56, New York, NY 10023
A dark wood slatted screen subtly defines an entry zone. It filters views into the main living space. Two substantial velvet chaise lounges now face each other. They create an intimate, off-axis conversation area.
The traditional fireplace mantel extends vertically with a fluted plaster panel. It becomes an integrated architectural focal point. A large, richly patterned rug is positioned off-center and at a diagonal. It challenges the room's inherent rectangularity.
This space alters perception through intentional visual shifts.
Design Philosophy
This design implements Deconstructive Functionality by reassigning common elements. An off-center rug and segmented seating redefine spatial use. Sculptural Intervention transforms the fireplace into an architectural focal point. These shifts create a dynamic equilibrium, inviting new interactions.
Spatial Narrative
Your eye first encounters the tall slatted screen, guiding you into the room. You walk past the off-center rug, its diagonal inviting movement through the space. The paired chaise lounges then offer a defined, intimate zone for conversation.
Light Study
Morning light filters softly through the sheer window treatment, creating gentle shadows. In the evening, the backlit curtain transforms into a glowing art piece. This shift changes the window's function from a view source to an internal light sculpture.
Living Vignette
A visitor traces the fluted plaster panel of the fireplace, feeling its texture. Two people lean back on opposing chaise lounges, engaged in quiet conversation across the rug.
Material Palette
Dark stained wood: It offers depth and filtered privacy, developing a rich patina over time.
Textured plaster: It provides tactile contrast, softening its form and gaining character over years.
Velvet upholstery: This material adds rich color and a soft feel, wearing with a deep, subtle nap.
