100 Barclay St Unit 21AD Kitchen — Cut Refuge design direction

Cut Refines Open Plan

Kitchen • 100 Barclay St Unit 21AD, New York, NY 10007
A slatted oak screen divides the dining nook, enabling semi-private meals. Perforated window screens filter light. They soften external views, creating deliberate, partial glimpses. These cuts introduce focused areas into the open layout. The extended island end drops into a lower, distinct counter surface. A full-height pantry includes a recessed bar for drinks or coffee. Overhead fixtures direct light, illuminating tasks while shading other areas. This design builds intimacy through defined zones.
The room provides intimate moments within its open structure.
Design Philosophy
This design employs semi-enclosed volumes to create distinct zones. Framed views manage the relationship with the exterior, filtering light and sightlines. These frameworks introduce deliberate, partial breaks in the open layout. The approach redefines privacy, offering both shelter and expansiveness.
Spatial Narrative
Your eye immediately registers the slatted oak screen, drawing attention to the defined dining area. You walk towards the kitchen, finding the extended island with its distinct, lowered counter surface. This movement transitions from open space to intimate, focused zones.
Light Study
Morning light enters filtered by perforated window screens, casting softened light across the banquette. In the evening, overhead fixtures direct light onto the dining table and island. This leaves surrounding areas in deeper shadow, enhancing intimacy and focus.
Living Vignette
A book lies open on the lowered island counter, its pages catching a focused beam of light. A glass of water sits next to a laptop in the pantry niche.
