Stark Emptiness, Concentrated Warmth

Living Room • 100 Barclay St Unit 21AD, New York, NY 10007
Walls turn desaturated grey, draining previous warmth. Floors become polished concrete, replacing wood. Seating concentrates into a single, vibrant island. This new layout emphasizes one rich zone. Cool, diffuse light fills the room's edges. A warm spotlight highlights the central seating. Peripheral furniture appears skeletal or translucent. This contrast creates focused intensity.
This room removes distraction to amplify a single point.
Design Philosophy
The design applies Deconstructivism by intentionally unsettling spatial expectations. It balances this tension with Wabi-Sabi principles, finding beauty in imperfection and absence. Emptiness defines the room's character. A singular element gains significance through its isolation.
Spatial Narrative
The eye travels immediately to the deep orange seating cluster. Walking across the cool concrete floor leads directly to this warm island. Sitting there, the vast grey room recedes, making the zone feel contained and powerful.
Light Study
Morning light entering the large windows illuminates the cool grey walls evenly. This diffuse light keeps the peripheral zones subdued. Evening brings a sharp, warm spotlight directly onto the central seating, while ambient coolness defines the room's edges.
Living Vignette
A hand reaches for a book placed on the dark wooden armrest. The deep velvet cushions hold the warmth of a long conversation.
Material Palette
Matte Grey Paint: The finish absorbs light, creating a cool, silent backdrop that holds its flat color consistently. Polished Concrete: This surface feels cool and solid underfoot, developing a subtle sheen with age and use. Burnt Orange Velvet: This fabric feels rich and soft, gaining a deeper patina and slight nap variation over time.
