100 Barclay St Unit 21AD Dining Room — Earthen Monoliths design direction

Sculpted Walls, Tactile Forms.

Dining Room • 100 Barclay St Unit 21AD, New York, NY 10007
Walls feature a continuous, subtly textured plaster finish. Hidden linear lighting creates a soft, diffuse glow from within the surfaces. This monochromatic approach reveals depth and form, establishing a hushed, contemplative atmosphere. A live-edge dark wood table anchors the dining zone. An irregularly shaped hand-knotted rug defines this area through varied texture. Armless chairs with sound-absorbing upholstery ensure quiet interaction.
The room reveals form through light and texture.
Design Philosophy
This design adheres to Tactile Minimalism, emphasizing natural materials and subtle textures over overt decoration. Subtractive Illumination integrates light sources within the architecture, allowing walls to emit a diffused glow. The space reduces visual noise, focusing on the honesty of materials and the inherent beauty of sculptural forms.
Spatial Narrative
The eye is drawn first to the expansive, subtly lit plaster wall. From there, attention moves to the geological presence of the live-edge dining table. The irregular, textured rug gently guides the viewer's gaze, inviting movement into the defined dining area.
Light Study
Morning light from tall windows casts soft shadows, highlighting the wall's texture. In the evening, integrated linear LEDs emit a soft, even glow. This illumination strategy shifts focus from external light to the internal forms of the room.
Living Vignette
A hand lightly traces the cool, smooth surface of the plaster wall. The low murmur of dinner conversation softens as it meets the sound-absorbing chair upholstery.
Material Palette
