Asymmetric Marble Creates Visual Tension

Bathroom • 100 Barclay St Unit 21AD, New York, NY 10007
A single vanity extends to one side, integrating one sink and offering expanded counter space. A custom-designed pedestal basin sits on the opposing wall, establishing intentional spatial imbalance. A large, frameless, irregularly shaped mirror with a dark tint becomes the primary reflective element. It is positioned off-center above the main vanity. Floor-to-ceiling fluted dark walnut panels form an accent wall, providing textural and color contrast. Honed black marble replaces existing polished white marble for a moodier feel on the new basin and vanity. Overhead track lighting features adjustable heads, allowing for dynamic illumination. This highlights architectural features and creates dramatic shadows. A sculptural dark bronze floor lamp is placed in a corner. Its form echoes the angularity and asymmetry of the new mirror.
This room argues with its forms to achieve balance.
Design Philosophy
The design applies `asymmetric balance` to create dynamic tension within the space. `Material contrast` defines the visual arguments presented. Each element contributes to a complex visual equilibrium. The room pushes the eye to discover deliberate relationships between forms.
Spatial Narrative
The eye first fixates on the large, irregularly shaped mirror. It then moves to the fluted dark walnut accent wall. The gaze traces the deliberate shift between the extended vanity and the opposing pedestal basin.
Light Study
Morning light enters softly, highlighting the existing white marble’s subtle veining. In the evening, track lighting creates sharp pools of light and deep shadows. Adjustable spotlights emphasize sculptural forms and material textures.
Living Vignette
A splash of cool water catches the matte black mirror’s edge. A warm hand traces the fluted walnut paneling's texture.
Material Palette
Honed black marble: It feels smooth and cool, gaining a slight sheen with age. Fluted dark walnut wood paneling: It feels warm and textured, deepening in color over time. Matte black metal: It feels solid and cool, resisting reflections and maintaining its muted finish.
