Intimate Enclosures For Restful Focus

Bedroom • 100 Barclay St Unit 21AD, New York, NY 10007
A custom wood-paneled alcove encloses the bed, creating a room within a room. A dark metal and reeded glass screen now defines the entry. Heavy charcoal velvet drapes block light and absorb sound. An integrated reading nook provides a quiet zone. Recessed lighting softly illuminates the bed alcove. Task lighting focuses light in the reading area. This new layout organizes the room into a series of deliberate enclosures.
Each enclosure in this room defines a distinct purpose.
Design Philosophy
The design establishes a sense of contained comfort. It applies the Proximate Layers framework by building a bed alcove and a secluded reading niche. Defined Thresholds are created with a full-height screen at the entry. These deliberate enclosures foster deep relaxation and focus within the room.
Spatial Narrative
Your eye moves first to the dark screen, guiding your entry into the room. You walk through a sequence of defined enclosures, leading past the bed within its alcove. Finally, you settle in the secluded reading niche, a space designed for quiet activity.
Light Study
Morning light enters from the two large windows, softly diffused by the heavy drapes. The drapes can fully block daylight when closed. In the evening, recessed lighting in the alcove and task lighting in the reading niche create focused pools of warm light.
Living Vignette
The sound of rain outside diminishes as you settle into the cushioned bench. A book rests open on your lap, illuminated by the focused light.
