Uneven Forms Compel Exploration

Living Room • 15 Central Park W Unit 11L, New York, NY 10023
The main seating is shifted off-center, its visual weight balanced by a massive sculptural piece. Several irregular rugs define fragmented zones instead of a single central anchor. Distributed floor and wall lighting creates focused pools of illumination, eliminating central overhead light. A sculptural object strategically interrupts natural paths, while a permeable architectural screen redefines a corner. This deliberate unevenness compels active exploration. Off-white walls and light wood floors provide a neutral stage for the design. Upholstery features raw linen and thick cotton in deep charcoal and muted beige tones. Sculptural forms use blackened steel, patinated bronze, and rough concrete. Distinct masses create visual tension and release throughout the room.
Balance in this room is discovered, not given.
Design Philosophy
The design employs Volumetric Counterpoint, where distinct masses create tension and release. Dynamic composition guides the eye through an actively engaged space. Unexpected visual weight is introduced by shifting primary elements off-center. This design compels exploration, allowing balance to be discovered rather than given.
Spatial Narrative
Your eye first goes to the off-center seating, drawn by the adjacent sculptural volume. Irregular rug forms guide your path, encouraging movement around the room. You navigate around the sculptural object, eventually settling into a distinct seating zone.
Light Study
Morning light streams through expansive windows, casting long, sharp shadows from sculptural forms. As evening approaches, floor lamps and wall sconces create focused pools of light. These distributed sources highlight specific objects and define intimate zones.
Living Vignette
You shift position on the off-center sofa, noticing the changing perspective on the sculptural wall piece. A glance down reveals the unique texture of an irregular rug form beneath your feet.
Material Palette
Raw Linen: It feels crisp yet soft, developing a gentle drape and subtle texture over time. Blackened Steel: Cold and precise to the touch, it holds a deep, matte finish that gains character with minor marks. Patinated Bronze: Warm and uneven in color, it deepens and acquires a unique luster with age and handling.
