Kitchen • 15 Central Park W Unit 11L, New York, NY 10023
This kitchen moves beyond simple function. Acoustic wood slats now line one wall, dampening sound and adding visual warmth. A backlit herb garden provides fresh scents near the prep area. Countertops combine cool honed stone with warm reclaimed wood, varying touch.
Multi-zone LED lighting shifts from bright task light to soft dining ambiance. Deeply textured, handmade forest green tiles replace the old backsplash. These new elements create a space that actively engages sight, touch, and scent.
This kitchen deepens connection through touch, sound, and scent.
Design Philosophy
Design focuses on deliberate sensory engagement. It uses Experiential layering to build varied inputs. Evocative materialism guides material selection, prioritizing touch and visual depth. This approach creates a deeper connection to the space through texture, sound, and scent.
Spatial Narrative
The eye first lands on the acoustic wood-slat paneling, its rhythmic texture drawing attention. It then drifts to the bright, living herb garden near the prep zone. You move across the soft wool rug, arriving at the varied surfaces of the main countertop.
Light Study
Morning light filters in from external windows, bright and clean for task work. Evening light shifts to warmer, dimmer tones from the tunable LEDs. This creates focused illumination over prep areas and a gentle glow for dining zones.
Living Vignette
You tear fresh basil leaves for a meal, their sharp scent filling the air. Your hand rests on the cool honed stone countertop, a grounded feeling.
Material Palette
Honed dark green natural stone: It feels smooth and cool, developing a soft patina over time.
Reclaimed oak: It feels warm and slightly coarse, gaining character with age and use.
Textured ceramic tiles: They feel uneven and rich, maintaining their finish with durable glaze.
