The existing peninsula becomes a deeply coved booth. Acoustic felt in deep terracotta lines the interior, absorbing sound. A dropped ceiling of warm aged oak planks creates a lower, more intimate height above the booth. Light quartz counters and muted sage green ceramic tile replace older surfaces.
A new central island provides a prep sink and additional seating, defining the active cooking zone. Improved task lighting illuminates work areas. The light wood flooring is refinished to a warmer tone, unifying the space.
This kitchen allows for both active work and quiet connection.
Design Philosophy
This design addresses distinct living modes within one room. The concept of Prospect and Refuge informs the booth's deep enclosure, offering quiet connection. Permutatio by argument creates a dialogue between the open cooking area and the enclosed seating. This allows for both active work and focused relaxation.
Spatial Narrative
Your eye goes first to the deeply coved booth seating. You walk around the new central island to reach the cooking zones. You can sit at the island for a quick meal or settle into the quiet booth for longer stays.
Light Study
Morning light enters, brightening the main kitchen and highlighting the island. Task lighting precisely illuminates cooking surfaces for clarity. Evening brings warm, focused light from integrated LEDs and a central pendant within the booth area.
Living Vignette
One person chops vegetables at the island prep sink. Another reads a book in the booth, illuminated by a low-level pendant light.
Material Palette
Aged oak planks: The wood is warm and textured, developing more character as it ages.
Light quartz: This surface feels smooth and cool, resisting stains and everyday wear.
Muted sage green ceramic tile: The tile has a smooth finish, is easy to clean, and holds its subtle color.
