Ochre & Rust: Surfaces Tell Stories

Kitchen • 151 E 58th St Unit 38A, New York, NY 10022
High-gloss white cabinetry is replaced with limewashed natural oak. Unlacquered brass hardware and faucet are installed. The banquette now features saddle leather upholstery. A raw, unsealed concrete backsplash defines the wall. Reclaimed wood shelves replace previous open shelving, while a solid timber table anchors the dining area. These materials actively tell stories. Limewashed oak reveals its grain and subtle pigment changes. Brass hardware immediately acquires a deep, personal patina. The concrete backsplash absorbs and displays marks of daily life. Saddle leather softens and darkens with touch, creating an autobiographical surface. The solid timber table will deepen in color over decades of use.
This room visibly records the passage of time and daily life.
Design Philosophy
This design embodies Temporal Alchemy, transforming new materials into storied objects. It prioritizes visible history and ongoing material evolution. Autobiographical Surfaces captures daily life through visible wear and acquired patina. Every chosen material gains character, telling its own story over time.
Spatial Narrative
Your eye is drawn to the textured concrete backsplash and reclaimed wood shelves. You walk from the functional kitchen into the intimate dining area. You sit on the saddle leather banquette at the solid timber table.
Light Study
Morning light streams in, illuminating the subtle variations in the limewashed oak and concrete. It brightens the brass hardware, highlighting its evolving patina. Evening light deepens the rich tones of the saddle leather and solid timber table, creating a warm, grounded glow.
Living Vignette
A hand traces the developing sheen on the saddle leather banquette arm. Freshly prepared vegetables leave a faint mark on the unsealed concrete backsplash.
