Textures Collide: Raw and Refined

Living Room • 151 E 58th St Unit 38A, New York, NY 10022
Walls feature exposed, unfinished concrete alongside a large panel of rough, bleached oak. This presents materials in an altered, juxtaposed order. The floor transitions from polished concrete in the main pathway to a deep-pile wool rug under the seating area, creating a segmented threshold of textures. Custom sofas combine robust, blackened steel frames with voluminous, relaxed ivory linen upholstery, reversing expectations of structural rigidity and comfort. A sculptural standing chair crafted from oxidized copper and dark leather alters the expected form of a lounge seat. Lighting strategically highlights distinct textures, casting harsh spots on rough surfaces and soft glows on refined ones.
Contrasting textures define every surface.
Design Philosophy
The design applies Deconstructed Palettes, presenting familiar materials in new arrangements. Tectonic Expression drives the sharp contrasts and balanced material dialogues. Surfaces invite a closer look at each material's inherent quality and how they interact. Expectations of form and hierarchy are intentionally reversed throughout the room.
Spatial Narrative
Your eye is drawn first to the expansive city views and the juxtaposed wall textures of concrete and oak. The polished concrete path guides movement through the room, transitioning abruptly to the soft wool rug. You settle into the linen-upholstered sofas or the sculptural standing chair, enveloped by contrasting tactile experiences.
Light Study
Morning light streams from the expansive city views, washing the exposed concrete walls in a cool, even glow. In the evening, targeted fixtures cast harsh, direct spots on the rough bleached oak, emphasizing its grain. Softer ambient light illuminates the relaxed linen upholstery, creating gentle shadows.
Living Vignette
A hand traces the cool, uneven surface of the raw concrete coffee table base. The deep pile wool rug muffles the sound of footsteps, creating a quiet zone in the seating area.
Material Palette
Exposed concrete: It feels cool and gritty, developing a subtle patina over time. Deep-pile wool: It feels soft and yielding, growing more compressed with use. Oxidized copper: It feels cool and irregular, deepening its blue-green surface over years.
