Dining Room • 151 E 58th St Unit 38A, New York, NY 10022
Walls wear a limewash treatment, showing false watermarks and uneven texture. An unlacquered brass fixture hangs above, already deeply oxidized. The dining table features a heavily scratched wood surface. Saddle leather chairs appear softened and worn.
New floor planks mimic centuries of foot traffic. Reclaimed timber creates visible distress where none existed. This room layers intentional imperfections. Every surface hints at a manufactured past.
Every surface here tells a manufactured story.
Design Philosophy
This design subverts Material Honesty by creating a fabricated sense of age. Surfaces are intentionally distressed, not genuinely worn. It employs Faux Archaeology, building new histories into every element. The room questions authenticity through its carefully aged layers.
Spatial Narrative
Your eye immediately goes to the grand, oxidized brass fixture above the table. You walk across distressed timber planks, feeling the uneven texture underfoot. You settle into a saddle leather chair, its worn surface inviting a long stay.
Light Study
Morning light streams in from the sprawling city view, highlighting the varied textures of the limewashed walls. In the evening, the large brass fixture casts a warm, soft glow, emphasizing the rich patina on all surfaces. Shadows deepen the faux wear and the leather's character.
Living Vignette
A guest runs their hand over the intentionally scored surface of the salvaged oak table. The worn saddle leather chairs creak softly as conversation flows.
Material Palette
Limewash: The multi-layered limewash finish gives walls a mottled, uneven texture that suggests historical repair.
Unlacquered Brass: Unlacquered brass oxidizes quickly, developing a deep, inconsistent patina as it ages.
Saddle Leather: Full-grain saddle leather is pre-treated to feel supple and appear cracked, showing a history of handling.
