Dynamic Space: Enclose, Release

Kitchen • 151 E 58th St Unit 38A, New York, NY 10022
The cooking zone now features matte deep forest green lacquered cabinets. A new, lower dark ceiling compresses this space. Honed dark granite counters add density. Rift-sawn dark oak shelves integrate into this focused area. This zone creates an intimate enclosure. The dining area contrasts with vast openness. A substantial dark wood dining table anchors this expansive zone. A large, multi-bulb chandelier spreads light widely above the table. The banquette's high sides offer a plush, enveloping seat. Light ivory walls amplify the room's open feel.
This room creates deliberate shifts in spatial feel.
Design Philosophy
This design applies Structural Contrast to define distinct zones. It alternates between intimate enclosure and vast openness. Iterative Scale guides the user through these contrasting spatial relationships. The room provides a dynamic experience.
Spatial Narrative
Your eye first lands on the compressed kitchen zone. It then moves to the expansive dining area, drawn by the wide light fixture. You ultimately settle into the plush banquette, viewing the city.
Light Study
Morning light is diffuse, entering the open dining area from expansive windows. It brightens the light ivory walls. In the evening, the large chandelier spreads dramatic light over the dining area, while the dark kitchen zone feels intimate.
Living Vignette
Someone plates warm food directly from the kitchen counter. They carry it a short distance to the waiting dark wood table.
Material Palette
Matte deep forest green lacquer: It offers a low-sheen finish and cleans easily. Honed dark granite: It feels cool and dense; it withstands heavy use.
