Bathroom • 151 E 58th St Unit 38A, New York, NY 10022
Large porcelain tiles on the floor show a warm wood grain. These tiles are hard and waterproof. Walls wear concrete-effect plaster, appearing rough but feeling soft. The floating vanity looks like heavy stone, yet uses a light composite.
A matte mirror above diffuses reflections, altering expected crispness. The metallic-colored linen shower curtain drapes like metal, offering fabric softness. This room consistently challenges visual and tactile expectations. It invites a playful questioning of materials.
This room makes you question what you see and what you feel.
Design Philosophy
This design explores the concept of Sensory Illusion. Materials are chosen to deceive the eye and surprise the touch. It adheres to Post-Minimalism by adding depth through subtle material play. This approach creates a visually clean but texturally rich environment.
Spatial Narrative
Your eye first catches the wood-like floor, then travels to the floating vanity. You approach the basin, the textured walls just a brush away. The room invites you to interact with its surprising surfaces.
Light Study
Morning light enters from the left, highlighting the matte mirror's diffused reflections. By evening, overhead fixtures cast a soft glow, emphasizing the vanity's faux stone texture. Shadows play subtly across the concrete-effect walls.
Living Vignette
You reach for a towel, your hand brushing the soft plaster wall. The floor feels cool, disguising its wood appearance.
Material Palette
Large-format porcelain tiles: They feel hard and cool underfoot. They resist moisture and heavy traffic without aging visibly.
Concrete-effect plaster: This surface feels smooth and soft, defying its rough visual. It maintains its subtle texture over time.
Lightweight composite material: It feels cool and solid, despite its light construction. This material retains its stone-like finish without natural wear.
Matte-finish mirror: Its surface is smooth and non-reflective to the touch. It diffuses light consistently, without showing age spots.
Heavy metallic-colored linen fabric: The fabric feels soft and drapes heavily. It retains its color and form with regular care.
