16 5th Ave #7 Living Room — Sensory Shifts design direction

Sensory Shifts Define Space

Living Room • 16 5th Ave #7, New York, NY 10011
Floor-to-ceiling felted wool panels line primary walls. These panels dampen sound and appear visually matte. Broad, even ambient light sources replace bright accents. Kinetic sculptures produce soft, organic sounds at intervals. A hidden system diffuses natural essential oil blends. Localized radiant heating and cooling create distinct thermal zones. The main path features varying textures: smooth concrete, woven sisal, then textured cork. A large, undyed wool rug anchors the central area.
This room tunes the senses to a deeper experience of space.
Design Philosophy
This design redefines the living room experience. It gently disorients the visual sense to heighten deeper perceptions. The strategy employs Perceptual Play through varied haptic and thermal elements. Haptic Topography maps distinct sensory zones within the space.
Spatial Narrative
The eye finds few visual anchors on the neutral walls. A textured floor path guides movement through the space. One then settles into a distinct thermal zone within the curved seating area.
Light Study
Morning light enters as a soft, even wash across the matte walls. Evening hours rely on broad, indirect ambient light. This creates a consistently non-assertive visual field throughout the day.
Living Vignette
A barely perceptible cedar scent greets the entering guest. Beneath their bare feet, the sisal transitions to warm cork.
Material Palette
Felted wool panels: Felted wool panels absorb sound and soften light. They maintain a quiet, matte appearance over time. Polished concrete: Polished concrete offers a cool, smooth surface. It develops a subtle sheen and patina with age. Textured cork: Textured cork provides a soft, warm feel underfoot. It compresses slightly, gaining character with use.
