16 5th Ave #7 Kitchen — Cloaked Corners design direction

Corners Claimed, Comfort Found

Kitchen • 16 5th Ave #7, New York, NY 10011
The bright, open kitchen space changes. A dark stained oak shelving unit forms a study nook. A deep velvet banquette walls the dining area. Island seating gains a wood-slatted canopy. Dark plaster finishes and heavy drapes redefine boundaries. Modified lighting creates focused pools and dramatic shadows. These additions provide intimate zones. They offer connection and separation from main activities.
The room provides intimate discovery within its expansive plan.
Design Philosophy
This design creates distinct zones within an open plan. It uses the principle of prospect and refuge. The plan forms enclosed comforts. Anthimeria guides key changes, turning nouns into verbs. This actively reshapes the room's volume and function.
Spatial Narrative
Your eye first finds the dark shelving unit, defining the study corner. You walk past the banquette to the island canopy's shelter. You sit deeply within the dining area's enclosed comfort.
Light Study
Morning light enters through draped windows, diffused and soft. It gently illuminates the banquette's velvet texture. Evening light is focused, tunneling dramatic shadows from the custom fixture, creating intimate pools.
Living Vignette
A hand reaches for a book from the dark oak shelf. Across the room, a low conversation flows from the deep banquette.
Material Palette
Dark stained oak: It feels solid and smooth, aging with a subtle, rich patina. Rich forest-green velvet: It feels soft and deep, developing a crushed texture over time. Textured charcoal plaster: It feels rough and deep, visually receding walls as light changes.
