Rhythmic Spaces: Compressed, Released

Bedroom • 16 5th Ave #7, New York, NY 10011
The room achieves an alternating rhythm of intimacy and openness. A low, dark ceiling plane defines the compressed sleep zone, flanked by dark storage. The window offers an expansive, released zone of light. A small, intensely dark nook provides another compression. Deep charcoal paint covers the dropped ceiling. Dark grey velvet upholsters the bed. Blackened oak forms furniture and nook cladding. Polished light grey concrete brightens the central pathway.
The room consistently shifts between states of compression and release.
Design Philosophy
This design orchestrates deliberate Rhythmic Spatial Shifts. It creates alternating zones of intimacy and openness. The Experiential Repetition of compression and release prevents any single state from dominating. This constant push-pull engages the occupant with intentional contrasts.
Spatial Narrative
The eye is first drawn to the bright, expansive window wall. Movement flows freely along the reflective central pathway. One settles into the deep quiet of the low-ceilinged bed zone or the enclosed reading nook.
Light Study
Morning light floods the window area, illuminating the released zones brightly. The low bed area remains a deeply shadowed volume. In the evening, integrated spotlights define the compressed bed zone. The central path maintains bright, consistent overhead light.
Living Vignette
A hand rests on the cool, dark headboard. The muffled quiet in the bed zone descends.
