Umber Haze: Deep Color Immersion

Kitchen • 16 5th Ave #7, New York, NY 10011
The entire kitchen and dining area is painted in deep, matte berry-brown. This color covers walls, ceiling, and all cabinetry. The unified tone creates an enveloping shell around the space. It gives a singular and calming emotional presence. Muted rosewood solid surfaces replace existing countertops and the island top. This provides a subtle tonal shift within the deep palette. Very dark, almost black-brown floors ground the intense overhead color. Diffused pendant lights avoid harsh contrasts. Dining chairs also match the main wall color.
Every surface contributes to a singular, deep color experience.
Design Philosophy
The design employs Chromatic Immersion, saturating the space in deep color. Tonal Layering uses subtle variations in materials and finishes. A singular deep berry-brown dominates walls, ceiling, and cabinetry. Muted rosewood and very dark floors add depth without contrast. This approach creates an intensely singular, calming presence.
Spatial Narrative
The eye first registers the pervasive deep berry-brown color on all surfaces. It then moves to the slightly lighter rosewood solid surfaces of the island and countertops. The deep black-brown floors ground the view, leading to the unified dining area.
Light Study
Morning light filters softly through the dining area windows, revealing the material textures. It prevents the deep color from feeling heavy. In the evening, diffused pendant lights cast a warm glow, enhancing the color depth without harsh shadows.
Living Vignette
A hand rests on the cool, muted rosewood solid surface. The quiet hum of the wine cooler fills the deeply colored room.
Material Palette
Matte Latex Paint: This paint absorbs light, creating a soft, non-reflective finish that maintains its deep color saturation. Solid Surface: The smooth, non-porous material feels cool to the touch and resists stains, ensuring durability and easy care. Velvet Upholstery: This fabric offers a soft, tactile texture that catches light subtly and develops a patina over time.
