16 5th Ave #7 Bathroom — Fractured Green design direction

Nature Disordered, Green Explodes.

Bathroom • 16 5th Ave #7, New York, NY 10011
The central floor under the tub becomes a horizontal living wall of moss and ferns. This green "rug" defies typical vertical plant installations. Polished marble vanities are replaced with raw, live-edge timber slabs with embedded river stones. Rough-hewn flagstone segments pave key walking paths. This room offers a fragmented experience of nature. Raw textures and misplaced botanical forms create a stimulating connection to the organic world. Small projectors cast dappled light onto walls and the living floor. The space challenges conventional order and placement.
This room fragments nature's expected order.
Design Philosophy
This design explores nature's raw and untamed forms. It uses Biophilic immersion by integrating living elements directly into the floor. Organic disruption challenges expected order and placement of natural materials. Rough textures and non-traditional installations redefine the organic experience within the room.
Spatial Narrative
Your eye first lands on the unexpected horizontal moss wall under the tub. Movement paths lead across rough flagstone segments, altering each step. The space encourages close observation of disparate natural elements.
Light Study
Morning sun streams through high windows, highlighting rough textures on stone and wood. In the evening, low-level projectors cast moving, dappled patterns. This creates shifting organic shadows across the living floor.
Living Vignette
Warm water splashes from the tub onto the verdant moss floor, absorbing instantly. A bare foot steps from smooth surrounding tiles onto the cold, uneven flagstone.
Material Palette
Living moss and fern wall: It feels soft and damp. This living surface requires careful moisture control to thrive. Live-edge timber slabs: It feels textured and warm underhand. The wood deepens in color and gains character over time. Polished river stones: They feel cool and smooth. These stones retain their luster and resist wear from use. Rough-hewn flagstone: It feels uneven and solid underfoot. This stone develops a natural patina with foot traffic. Uncut basalt column: It feels coarse and unyielding. The column maintains its ancient, rugged appearance indefinitely.
