16 5th Ave #7 Kitchen — Depth & Arc design direction

Compressed Dining, Open Kitchen

Kitchen • 16 5th Ave #7, New York, NY 10011
The dining area ceiling and upper walls receive deep, matte blue-black paint. This creates a low, intimate canopy overhead. Vertically ribbed, light-toned acoustic panels clad the lower walls. These panels rise towards the dark ceiling, adding texture. Oversized, inverted dome pendant lights hang above the kitchen island. Their polished metallic interiors reflect and expand light upwards. Fewer, substantial bar stools visually anchor the island. A slender console table momentarily narrows the path into the kitchen, creating an entrance.
This room sculpts space through light and shadow.
Design Philosophy
This design applies Deconstructivism by breaking conventional space perception. It uses Juxtaposition with compressed zones contrasting open areas. Intimacy is built through dark overhead planes. Light is released in expansive, reflective elements.
Spatial Narrative
Your eye first goes to the bright, oversized pendants above the kitchen island. You walk past the console table, feeling the path briefly narrow, then move towards the dining area. You sit beneath the dark canopy, enclosed by soft walls, grounded by the dark floor.
Light Study
Morning light streams from the large window, reflecting off kitchen surfaces. It highlights the island, casting soft glows from the pendants' reflective interiors. In the evening, the pendants become primary light sources, creating a luminous release against the deep, matte dining ceiling.
Living Vignette
The sound of ice clinking in glasses barely echoes in the ribbed dining area. Across the counter, a book lies open beside a cup, catching reflected light from the dome above.
