Kitchen • 252 7th Ave Unit 10P, New York, NY 10001
Unfinished white oak cabinets replace old ones. Honed soapstone covers new countertops. Unlacquered brass hardware installs on all doors. Saddle leather bar stools add seating.
These surfaces mark and dull with use. They absorb oils and deepen in color. They develop a unique sheen and character over time. A limewash wall finish softens the light.
This room documents the passage of daily rituals.
Design Philosophy
This design centers on Patina as design. Every material surface changes with use. Diazeugma application ensures varied materials contribute to a singular theme. Surfaces mark, dull, and deepen, revealing daily life. The kitchen gains character as time passes.
Spatial Narrative
The eye first lands on the substantial soapstone island. You walk around the central pillar, moving between prep and serving areas. Finally, you sit on a leather stool at the counter.
Light Study
Morning light streams in from the east, highlighting cabinet grain. It makes the brass hardware gleam brightly. Evening light casts soft shadows across the limewash wall, muting colors.
Living Vignette
A hand presses firmly on the soapstone counter, leaving a faint oil trace. A ring taps against the brass pull on a cabinet door.
Material Palette
Unlacquered brass hardware: It tarnishes and brightens with use. Its surface changes constantly.
Honed soapstone: It absorbs oils and darkens over time. Every interaction reveals itself.
Unfinished white oak: It marks and dulls, then develops a soft sheen. The wood's character deepens with age.
Saddle leather: It creases, softens, and distresses. The material becomes unique to its user.
