252 7th Ave Unit 10P Dining Room — Pinch & Burst design direction

Angled Planes, Sudden Clarity

Dining Room • 252 7th Ave Unit 10P, New York, NY 10001
A dark, heavily textured block projects into the main dining area. This creates immediate compression around the table. A tall, forest green partition forces quick passage into the kitchen. It then opens abruptly. Lighting shifts from intense spotlights to wide, soft washes. Blocky furniture occupies constrained zones. Elongated forms define open areas. No gradual transitions occur.
This room dictates movement and perception.
Design Philosophy
Deconstructivism shapes the angled walls and abrupt shifts. Brutalism informs the raw materials and dense forms. The design creates a sequence of sharp spatial experiences. It moves between intense intimacy and expansive clarity.
Spatial Narrative
The eye first fixates on the deep charcoal wall. Movement is compressed entering the kitchen by a tall green partition. The space then bursts open, revealing the full kitchen area.
Light Study
Morning light enters through large windows, creating stark contrasts with shadowed angles. Evening spotlights focus intense pools of light over the dining table. They transition to general, softer washes in open zones.
Living Vignette
A diner leans forward, caught in a spotlight's beam. The heavy table base grounds the moment.
Material Palette
Deep charcoal plaster: Its rough finish visually pushes into the room. It maintains a raw, permanent character. Forest green lacquered panel: This smooth, sharp surface creates a momentary constriction. It shows few signs of wear. Heavy monolithic dark base: This dense form grounds the dining table. It remains solid and unchanging.
