Living Room • 252 7th Ave Unit 10P, New York, NY 10001
This open space now divides into four numbered zones. Each zone holds a function that defies its assigned purpose. Formal dining chairs gather around a low coffee table for nourishment. A formal armchair sits under an industrial lamp for contemplation.
Sequential wall panels display clashing patterns, explicitly numbered. Polished concrete inlays mark these distinct numerical areas. Lighting fixtures from different eras are arranged in a specific, illogical sequence. Each material and object creates a deliberate functional inversion.
This room redefines how elements interact within a structured space.
Design Philosophy
The design applies Categorical Inversion by placing objects in unexpected functional contexts. Structured Anarchy guides the explicit numerical sequencing of patterns and lighting. This creates a space where each element contradicts its neighbor. The room presents a catalog of deliberate mismatches, producing an ordered disorientation.
Spatial Narrative
Your eye immediately follows the numbered wall panels. You walk across the distinct floor inlays marking each zone. You might sit on the casual beanbag chair placed in the formal 'Exchange' area.
Light Study
Morning light streams through large windows, illuminating contrasting wall patterns brightly. Evening light from the mid-century chandelier casts warm pools over the reading nook. A theatrical spotlight highlights a single houseplant, regardless of the time of day.
Living Vignette
Someone leans back in the high-back velvet armchair, reading under the stark industrial task lamp. A plate rests on the low coffee table, used as the primary dining surface.
Material Palette
Polished concrete: It feels cool and smooth, developing a subtle patina with wear.
Velvet upholstery: It feels soft and rich, showing light and shadow with movement.
Repurposed vintage textiles: They feel varied and textured, carrying original history and fading gently.
