Bathroom • 252 7th Ave Unit 10P, New York, NY 10001
An enormous, cool blue-gray polished stainless steel mirror spans the entire vanity wall. It creates disorienting reflections. A single, monumental pendant light fixture hangs above the sink. A tiny, minimalist metal stool sits near the shower entrance. It challenges typical human scale.
The exceedingly long but incredibly shallow trough sink demands careful use. The redesigned toilet area creates a deep, narrow visual corridor. A custom pocket door emphasizes its perceived confinement. This room destabilizes typical bathroom expectations.
This room forces you to contend with scale.
Design Philosophy
This design challenges visual perception directly. It employs Exaggerated Form, disrupting typical expectations of scale and utility. Perceptual Play is used to create dynamic tension within the space. The room forces a choice between awe and discomfort, making every interaction deliberate.
Spatial Narrative
Your eye immediately catches the colossal, reflective mirror, drawing you into its distorted depth. You approach the impossibly long, shallow sink, navigating its delicate balance. Your path then leads past the undersized stool, underscoring the room's disproportionate elements.
Light Study
Morning light strikes the vast stainless steel mirror, bouncing bright, cool reflections across the room. In the evening, the single monumental pendant casts a soft, sculptural glow over the vanity area. It leaves other corners in deeper shadow, enhancing their perceived distance.
Living Vignette
You lean over the trough sink, carefully washing your hands in the shallow basin. The oversized pendant light casts a long shadow behind your head onto the vast, reflective wall.
Material Palette
Polished stainless steel: Smooth and highly reflective, it shows every touch but cleans easily.
Brushed metal and frosted glass: Cool and diffuse, the metal gains a subtle patina as the glass softens light.
Solid dark metal: Dense and heavy, it maintains its stark presence with minimal wear.
Stark white solid surface material: Clean and non-porous, it resists stains and retains its crisp, uniform look.
Matte black finish: Visually absorbs light, developing a subtle sheen with frequent contact.
