Bathroom • 252 7th Ave Unit 10P, New York, NY 10001
This bathroom challenges expectations. A tall felt screen diverts your path to the toilet alcove. Heated stone meets raw clay in the shower, creating distinct zones. Sounds of rainfall replace the typical shower flow.
Thick velvet hides the toilet, dampening sound and sight. Essential oils introduce varied scents through the space. Hard surfaces contrast with soft textiles underfoot. Each area offers a unique physical engagement.
This room delivers a sequence of deliberate sensory experiences.
Design Philosophy
The design embraces Sensory Disjunction. It deliberately introduces contrasting textures and temperatures. Material Dialogue occurs through unexpected pairings like heated stone and raw clay. This approach creates distinct physical experiences throughout the room.
Spatial Narrative
Your eye first catches the tall felt screen, diverting your walk. You navigate around it towards the hidden alcove. In the shower, you find the warmth of stone opposite cool, textured clay.
Light Study
Morning light filters in from the main window, brightening the vanity zone. Shadows lengthen in the toilet alcove due to the thick velvet curtain. Evening light focuses on downlighting in specific zones, deepening the room's contrasts.
Living Vignette
You step onto the heated stone bench, water sounds beginning to fill the shower. A different essential oil scent lifts as you reach for a towel near the vanity.
Material Palette
Pressed wool felt: The felt feels soft and absorbs sound. It holds its shape well over time.
Raw unfired clay tiles: These tiles offer an earthy, textured grip. They will subtly deepen in color and scent with use.
Heated stone: The stone feels smooth and radiates warmth. It maintains its cool, solid presence when unheated.
