38 E 63rd St Bedroom — Volumes & Voids design direction

Compressed Sleep, Expansive Living

Bedroom • 38 E 63rd St, New York, NY 10065
The wall behind the bed is painted deep charcoal, creating a compressed sleeping volume. A low-profile bed and dark bedside tables anchor this area. Focused downlights illuminate the space for rest. Crisp white walls and a large, light-colored rug define an expansive zone near the window. A translucent screen subtly divides the entry from this open area. Broad ambient light fills the released space.
The room clearly defines space for focused rest and open movement.
Design Philosophy
The design uses Graduated Scale to create distinct spatial experiences. It establishes clear Experiential Zones for rest and movement. This orchestration of Volumes and Voids shapes perception within the room.
Spatial Narrative
The eye is drawn to the deep charcoal wall behind the low bed. Movement is guided past the translucent screen towards the window. One settles on the chaise lounge, facing the expansive outdoor view.
Light Study
Morning sun pours through the window, brightening the open zone. Evening brings focused downlights over the sleeping area. Broad ambient light softly diffuses near the window after dusk.
Living Vignette
A hand reaches to dim the bedside light. Bare feet find the soft sisal rug before walking to the window.
Material Palette
Polished concrete: Feels cool underfoot, developing a subtle sheen with time. Deep charcoal paint: Absorbs light, maintaining its deep hue over years. Sisal rug: Offers a natural, rough texture, softening subtly with use.
