Tactile Textures, Defined Zones

Dining Room • 38 E 63rd St, New York, NY 10065
Walls feature staggered acoustic panels in felt, reeded timber, and smooth plaster. Full-height drapes cover the window for sound and insulation. A custom banquette includes a heated section beneath cool honed stone. Track lighting provides both broad ambient wash and precise spot illumination. A thick, hand-tufted wool rug defines the dining area. It absorbs ambient sound. Smooth wood flooring sections delineate other zones. This arrangement supports varied activities and different moods.
Every surface in this room contributes to a distinct sensory experience.
Design Philosophy
This design applies Sensory Design principles directly. Diverse textures and thermal contrasts actively engage touch. Acoustic Sculpting shapes the room's soundscape with varied material surfaces. These elements work together to create distinct zones for sensory experience.
Spatial Narrative
Your eye first meets the textured wall panels along the long dimension. You walk across the plush wool rug to the dining table. Then you settle onto the custom banquette, experiencing its unique thermal surfaces.
Light Study
Morning light streams in from the large window, softly illuminating the textured walls. In the evening, track lighting provides a broad ambient wash, highlighting specific textures with focused spots. This system shifts the room's perceived depth and mood.
Living Vignette
A hand rests on the cool stone of the bench, then shifts to the warmer section. Laughter fills the space, softened by the acoustic panels.
Material Palette
Wool felt: It feels soft and dense, quieting sound, and holds its shape with age. Reeded timber: It offers a fine ridged texture, adding subtle rhythm, and deepens in tone over time. Honed Stone: It feels cool and smooth, gaining a slight patina without losing its matte finish.
