38 E 63rd St Bedroom — Layered Enclosures design direction

Protective Layers, Open Views

Bedroom • 38 E 63rd St, New York, NY 10065
A curved plaster alcove now encloses the bed. A soft linen canopy drapes from the ceiling above it. This design creates a deeply secure sleeping area. It offers a sense of constant shelter. A multi-level platform holds the bed and lounge steps. Hidden panels conceal storage and a pull-out desk. A slatted wood screen separates the sleeping zone from a quiet lounge. Heavy velvet curtains behind the screen block sound.
This room provides secure enclosure while offering varied perspectives.
Design Philosophy
This design prioritizes deep comfort and personal control. It builds upon "Layered Enclosures" to create defined zones within one room. "Nested Spaces" are crafted for varied activities, from sleeping to quiet work. "Vantage Points" are strategically placed, offering elevated views and reflected perspectives.
Spatial Narrative
Your eye first traces the curved plaster wall around the bed. You then walk around the slatted screen to find a quiet lounge. Sit on the raised window seat, looking out, or recline on the platform steps.
Light Study
Morning light streams through the deep window, reflecting off the angled mirror. It filters gently through the sheer linen canopy over the bed. In the evening, soft diffused light creates deep shadows within the nested spaces.
Living Vignette
You push open a hidden panel to reveal a tucked-away desk. You quietly settle onto a lower platform step, listening to the rain outside.
Material Palette
Smooth Plaster: It feels cool and clean, developing a gentle patina with time. Sheer Natural Linen: It feels soft and airy, softening further with each washing. Dark Stained Walnut: It feels substantial and smooth, deepening its rich tone over years.
