Contrasting Zones, Grand Living

Living Room • 38 E 63rd St, New York, NY 10065
The bay window alcove becomes a deeply hued zone. Walls and ceiling receive a profound indigo paint. Two oversized armchairs, upholstered in dark velvet, invite close conversation. This area offers an intimate sense of enclosure. The main living area brightens with soft off-white walls and ceiling. This creates an expansive, airy feel. A large greige wool rug grounds the space. Honed concrete replaces the coffee table, offering a lighter presence.
The room actively shifts between intimate focus and expansive gathering.
Design Philosophy
The design uses spatial contrast to define distinct zones. Deep hues and soft light create an intimate bay window area. Lighter tones and broader illumination mark the expansive living space. Light layering further differentiates these zones, controlling interaction and mood.
Spatial Narrative
Your eye first lands on the deep indigo bay window. You walk past the light-toned sectional into this intimate nook. Here, two velvet armchairs offer a focused seating experience.
Light Study
Morning light from the bay window fills the entire room, softly illuminating both zones. Evening brings low-slung sconces and a floor lamp to the bay, creating a warm glow. Recessed ceiling lights brighten the main area for general activity.
Living Vignette
A guest settles into a velvet armchair, turning to face the main room. Another person opens a book on the honed concrete coffee table.
Material Palette
Velvet: Plush and soft to the touch, velvet develops a rich patina over time. Honed concrete: Smooth and cool, its matte finish becomes softer with use. Wool rug: Soft underfoot and durable, it cleans easily and holds up to traffic. Polished dark wood: Smooth and reflective, it gains depth and character with age.
