38 E 63rd St Living Room — Nested Enclosures design direction

Layered Spaces Redefine Intimacy.

Living Room • 38 E 63rd St, New York, NY 10065
A freestanding architectural element creates a 'room within a room'. Varied lighting zones shift from broad ambient to focused illumination. Distinct material textures differentiate intimate pockets. New soft furnishings reinforce layered enclosure. A tall slatted wood screen defines the bay window nook. Upholstery shifts from light linen to textured bouclé in these private areas. Rich walnut wood adds depth. Aged brass accents warm lighting.
This room offers distinct personal spaces within a larger volume.
Design Philosophy
This design employs nested enclosures to redefine intimacy. It achieves multiple scales of personal space within the larger volume. The framework of prospect and refuge guides this approach. The room provides private moments inside its generous layout.
Spatial Narrative
Your eye first draws to the bay window's defined enclosure. You walk past the main social area. You then settle into one of the intimate seating nooks.
Light Study
Morning light floods the main volume through the bay windows. Focused, dimmable illumination creates defined pockets in the evening. This offers soft, contained light for private moments.
Living Vignette
Inside the bay window nook, the slatted screen filters the afternoon sun. A person reads a book, undisturbed.
Material Palette
Heavy Velvet: Its deep pile absorbs sound. It drapes richly over time. Walnut Wood: This dense wood offers a smooth, warm surface. It deepens in color with age. Bouclé Fabric: Its looped texture feels soft and inviting. It resists pilling with regular use.
