Kitchen • 530 Park Ave Unit 17A, New York, NY 10065
The island now acts as a central core. One side features polished black granite for active tasks. The opposite side uses honed black granite for quiet moments. Integrated shelving holds cookbooks or display items.
Two circulation paths exist. A direct route offers clear access. A perimeter path invites slower movement. Zoned lighting adapts to activity. A wall niche hides storage behind an open display.
This room separates activity from contemplation.
Design Philosophy
This design creates distinct functional zones. It employs Prospect and Refuge by offering both open views and contained spaces. Antanaclasis is applied through forms that shift purpose. This method creates unexpected personal pockets within the room.
Spatial Narrative
Your eye first lands on the dual-finished island. It guides you towards the active prep zone. You then discover the quieter side, offering a place to sit.
Light Study
Morning light streams through the large window, illuminating the active island surface. Evening light becomes zoned. Direct task lighting brightens prep areas. Diffused lighting under the island's quieter side creates a soft glow.
Living Vignette
A hand slides across the honed stone surface, holding an open book. Freshly cooked food rests on the polished granite, ready for serving.
