Layered Spaces for Quiet Focus

Bedroom • 530 Park Ave Unit 17A, New York, NY 10065
The spacious bedroom is restructured into distinct zones. A full-height slatted screen now separates the entrance from the sleeping area. A deep, upholstered window seat frames city views. The bed is replaced by a four-poster, its sheer drapes creating a soft enclosure. A reading corner, defined by a darker wall color and a plush rug, provides focused quiet. Task lighting illuminates each pocket.
Each area provides a distinct sense of enclosure and purpose.
Design Philosophy
The design thinking centers on creating intimate pockets within a larger, open volume. It applies 'Subtractive Volume' to define these distinct zones. 'Inhabited Thresholds' forms usable spaces like the deep window seat. This approach provides comfort and focused activity.
Spatial Narrative
Your gaze first meets the full-height slatted screen. You walk along this partition into the sleeping area. Settle onto the deep window seat or into the reading corner armchair.
Light Study
Morning light streams in from the large eastern windows. This brightens the entire room, highlighting the airy volume. Evening shifts to softer, indirect ambient light, complemented by focused task lighting in each reading pocket.
Living Vignette
The quiet hum of the city drifts in as you recline on the window seat. A specific lamp casts a warm glow over the pages of a book in your hands.
Material Palette
Upholstered fabric: This textured weave feels soft to the touch and resists wear over time. Sheer linen: The fabric is light and airy, softening with each wash without losing its drape. Deep pile wool rug: This rug feels plush underfoot and gains character as it ages. Solid wood: The smooth wood feels substantial and develops a rich patina with use.
