530 Park Ave Unit 17A Bathroom — Shadow & Threshold design direction

Blurring Lines Bathroom Upgrade

Bathroom • 530 Park Ave Unit 17A, New York, NY 10065
A slatted dark wood screen partially encloses the shower. This blurs the line between open room and bathing zone. High-gloss obsidian tiles line the shower interior, creating an intimate yet reflective space. Above the vanity, dimmable cove lighting shifts perception from contained to expansive. A darker flooring plinth defines the vanity area. Oversized, frameless mirrors extend upward, visually expanding the room. Deep-set dark wood frames around these mirrors ground the reflections. This design creates zones that feel both distinct and part of a larger flow.
This room challenges how you perceive its boundaries.
Design Philosophy
This design uses Dynamic Zoning to define and blur distinct areas within the bathroom. Elements like the slatted screen and flooring plinth establish zones without rigid separation. Reflective Boundaries are employed through high-gloss tiles and oversized mirrors. These surfaces expand visual space while simultaneously containing specific views.
Spatial Narrative
Your eye first travels along the dark wood screen, partially obscuring the shower. You then step onto the darker plinth defining the vanity area. Your reflection in the oversized mirror stretches upward, making the space feel taller.
Light Study
Morning light filters gently through the screen, softening the shower area. Evening brings warm, dimmable cove lighting around the vanity. This light defines an intimate zone or washes the entire ceiling with brightness.
Living Vignette
Reach for a towel, its texture contrasting with the sleek tile. The mirror captures a clear, expansive view behind you.
Material Palette
Dark stained ash wood: It feels smooth and offers a solid visual weight, developing a richer patina with age. High-gloss obsidian porcelain tiles: They feel cool and sleek to the touch, retaining their deep reflective sheen over time.
