All cabinet hardware is removed. Integrated touch-latch mechanisms create flush, unadorned surfaces. Island seating is gone, making the island a pure working volume. Concealed linear LED lighting replaces ceiling fixtures, withdrawing the source to highlight only its radiant effect.
Black countertops are replaced with a dark gray micro-cement. This monolithic surface extends up the backsplash, forming an unbroken, sculptural plane. The dual flooring transitions to a single, large-format, light gray polished concrete tile. This creates an expansive, uninterrupted ground.
Absence of excess clarifies every remaining element.
Design Philosophy
Radical Minimalism guides this space. It challenges perception by defining presence through absence. Phenomenological Design focuses on the subtle shifts of light and surface. Each remaining element gains profound weight and clarity by stripping away excess.
Spatial Narrative
The eye is drawn to the unbroken plane of the micro-cement countertops and backsplash. You move around the pure, unblemished island volume. The continuous polished concrete floor unifies the entire expansive ground plane.
Light Study
Morning light from unseen coves washes walls and ceiling, creating an even, diffused glow. In the evening, the same concealed linear LEDs define architectural planes, highlighting texture without harsh shadows.
Living Vignette
A single ceramic bowl sits on the island, its form emphasized by the stark surface. The quiet hum of the refrigerator is the only sound.
Material Palette
Polished micro-cement: It offers a velvety, non-reflective finish and wears with durable resilience.
Honed black granite: It presents an absolute flatness and tactile quality that develops a subtle patina with age.
Large-format light gray polished concrete tiles: This creates an expansive, uniform ground plane that acquires a soft sheen over time.
