The existing flat ceiling is replaced by a dramatically vaulted, stark white plaster ceiling. An impossibly wide, custom light fixture spans the island, establishing a dominant presence. A tiny ceramic object sits at the island's far end, a quiet counterpoint to the grand scale.
The entire back wall features floor-to-ceiling dark grey panels. One central panel slides open, revealing a deeply recessed alcove lined with deep burgundy velvet. Oversized, sculptural chairs with deep seats define the island's new scale for gathering.
This design intentionally reconfigures space through extreme variations in scale.
Design Philosophy
This design employs perceptual play to redefine spatial expectations. Narrative architecture guides the eye through a series of contrasting scales. Objects force a re-evaluation of their relationship to the overall volume. This approach creates a dynamic and engaging environment.
Spatial Narrative
The eye immediately travels up to the dramatically vaulted ceiling and its expansive white plaster. It then drops to the impossibly wide linear light, drawing attention along the island's length. Your gaze finally rests on the tiny object, prompting closer observation from the oversized seating.
Light Study
Morning light floods through windows, washing the vaulted ceiling in a bright, diffuse glow. In the evening, the wide linear pendant focuses a deliberate, even light across the island surface. The hidden alcove offers a warm, targeted illumination for intimate moments.
Living Vignette
You slide the seamless dark panel open. A deeply recessed, brightly lit alcove lined with burgundy velvet offers a private moment.
Material Palette
Vaulted Plaster Ceiling: Its stark white surface feels cool and smooth to the touch, aging with a fine, natural crackle.
Deep Burgundy Velvet: This plush fabric absorbs light, feeling soft and rich, developing a gentle sheen with use.
Honed Light Grey Marble: The island surface is cool and smooth, offering a matte finish that develops a subtle patina over time.
