Omission Defines Space

Kitchen • 6 W 20th St #5, New York, NY 10011
Upper cabinetry was removed, replaced by smooth wall panels. These panels hide storage and a refrigerator behind handle-less doors. The kitchen island became one monolithic block of raw concrete. Its surface holds the sink and cooktop, with no visible hardware. Lighting now recesses entirely, emanating from coves and pinhole fixtures. Windows remain completely bare, without treatments. Appliances integrate behind panels, creating a continuous visual line.
Absence itself functions as a design element.
Design Philosophy
This design centers on Minimalist Discourse and Subtractive Form. Every element serves a direct purpose, letting the absence of typical clutter define the space. Walls conceal storage, making hidden functions important. The design encourages quiet contemplation, emphasizing clean lines and raw materials.
Spatial Narrative
The eye is drawn to the monolithic concrete island, a central anchor in the room. Movement flows around its clean form to the uninterrupted wall planes. You stand at the bare window, observing the outside world without distraction.
Light Study
Morning light enters directly through bare windows, washing the pale oak floor in natural brightness. As day turns to evening, recessed linear LEDs activate, highlighting architectural forms. Pinhole fixtures provide focused task light over the counter, leaving other areas in soft shadow.
Living Vignette
A single piece of fruit rests on the raw concrete island. Its simple form stands out against the stark surface.
Material Palette
Raw troweled concrete: Its uneven surface feels cool, developing a unique patina with age. Pale natural oak flooring: The wood feels warm underfoot and gains character as it ages.
