6 W 20th St #5 Living Room — Measured Expansion design direction

Room Shrinks, Then Expands

Living Room • 6 W 20th St #5, New York, NY 10011
A low-ceilinged alcove introduces a compressed zone. Deep indigo walls and heavy drapery enclose a singular armchair. This space offers a focused, quiet moment. Concentrated task lighting illuminates a small side table. The main living area then opens into a released volume. Crisp white walls and a high-gloss ceiling expand the space. Polished concrete floors reflect light and enhance openness. Slender furniture maintains this wide, airy feel.
This design directs your experience through deliberate spatial shifts.
Design Philosophy
This design uses Spatial Psychology to manipulate volume. It employs Contrast Theory to create distinct zones. Low ceilings and dark colors compress space. High ceilings and reflective surfaces expand it.
Spatial Narrative
Your eye first lands on the compressed alcove's deep tones. You walk from this intimate zone into the expansive main living area. Here, you settle on a low-slung sofa, taking in the full sweep of the open space.
Light Study
Morning light floods the expansive main area through large windows, bright and diffuse. Evening brings warm, focused task lighting to the compression alcove. Cool overhead light in the main area provides consistent, broad illumination.
Living Vignette
You recline in the plush armchair, absorbed in a book under a focused lamp. Later, you walk to the open kitchen, preparing a meal under the bright, ambient light.
Material Palette
Deep indigo matte paint: It feels soft and absorbs light, deepening in hue over time. Polished concrete: It feels cool and smooth, developing a subtle patina with wear. Acoustic velvet paneling: It feels plush and muffles sound, retaining its rich texture for years.
