Filtered Green: Layered, Obscured Views

Bathroom • 6 W 20th St #5, New York, NY 10011
A living wall, partially hidden by slatted oak, brings a green presence to the room. Live-edge oak warms the existing stone vanity. River stone and textured green tile transform the shower interior. Light diffusers cast dappled patterns, mimicking light through leaves. Storage operates without visible hardware, keeping surfaces smooth. The room offers subtle visual and tactile textures. It creates a space for quiet observation.
This room layers natural elements for a contemplative experience.
Design Philosophy
This design transforms a stark bathroom into a layered natural environment. Sensory Layering introduces diverse textures, from polished stone to rough wood and soft wool. Subtractive Design removes visual clutter, like hardware, to highlight natural forms. The space now encourages contemplation through filtered light and obscured views.
Spatial Narrative
Your eye first catches the living wall, partially obscured by oak panels. You step onto the soft wool rug near the tub. The space encourages slow movement and visual exploration.
Light Study
Morning light filters through louvers, casting soft, dappled patterns across the walls. Evening light from recessed fixtures mimics this natural effect. The diffused illumination avoids harsh shadows at any time.
Living Vignette
You trace the rough edge of the oak vanity while the quiet hum of the living wall system runs. Water drips slowly from the faucet, echoing a soft rain.
Material Palette
Vertical Garden: Living plants provide soft, varied textures and maintain fresh air. Live-edge White Oak: This wood adds organic warmth and develops a rich patina with age. Polished River Stone: Smooth, cool underfoot, these stones resist wear and retain their natural luster. Undyed Wool Rug: Soft and dense, wool provides natural insulation and resists stains, mellowing in color.
