Soft Layers Carve Open Space

Dining Room • 6 W 20th St #5, New York, NY 10011
Ceiling tracks deploy sheer fabric panels. These panels redefine dining and lounge zones. Wall tapestries replace existing rigid art. They soften large wall surfaces, adding acoustic quiet. Lounge seating now features woven cane details. Dining chairs incorporate subtle woven patterns. A neutral flat-weave rug anchors the lounge area. Concealed up-lighting diffuses light through all new textiles.
The room achieves private focus within an open layout.
Design Philosophy
The design uses layered textiles to soften the existing open plan. Fabric panels enable dynamic spatial carving. These permeable boundaries define distinct areas. The room maintains connection without isolation.
Spatial Narrative
Your eye travels first to the large fabric panels. They guide movement through the open space. You settle into the lounge's woven seating, enveloped by soft textures.
Light Study
Morning light filters gently through sheer panels. This creates soft shadows and diffused brightness across surfaces. Evening brings a warm glow from concealed up-lighting, highlighting the tapestries.
Living Vignette
A guest reaches out to touch the woven wall tapestry. Its textured surface feels unexpectedly soft beneath their fingers.
Material Palette
Sheer linen and cotton blends: Sheer linen and cotton blends feel light and airy, softening over time with a gentle drape. Thick, hand-loomed wool and jute: Thick wool and jute offer substantial texture, growing richer with age and use. Woven cane, rattan, and tightly knit boucle: Woven cane and rattan feel firm and natural, developing a unique patina over time; boucle offers soft, textured comfort that resists wear.
