6 W 20th St #5 Kitchen — Eccentric Geometry design direction

Geometry Reimagined. Form Re-evaluated.

Kitchen • 6 W 20th St #5, New York, NY 10011
The central island splits into two asymmetrical forms. One half is a traditional counter; the other offers low-slung lounge seating. The primary sink moves to a secondary counter in a niche. An oversized chandelier hangs above the cooking zone. A sculptural pantry unit stands near the kitchen's edge. Upper cabinetry shows alternating depths and finishes. A mirror wall replaces part of the backsplash. Polished and rough-hewn surfaces mix throughout. Irregular floor tiles form a 'rug' within the wood.
This kitchen deliberately challenges expectations of space and utility.
Design Philosophy
This design intentionally places elements outside expected contexts. It creates a re-evaluation of form and function. Deconstructivism guides the fragmented compositions seen here. Juxtaposition Theory places disparate elements together to generate new meanings.
Spatial Narrative
Your eye first lands on the oversized chandelier above the cooking zone. You then move towards the split island, one side a counter, the other a lounge. You can sit there on the unconventional cushions, grounded by the abstract rug.
Light Study
Morning light enters the main window, brightening the elaborate curtain system. The mirror wall reflects this light, spreading it across the kitchen. Evening hours bring a dramatic glow from the oversized chandelier, highlighting lacquered surfaces.
Living Vignette
A cook leans against the low-slung island, sketching ideas on a tablet. Later, a guest opens a cabinet door, revealing a vibrant pop-art panel behind it.
Material Palette
High-gloss black lacquer: It feels smooth and reflects light sharply, maintaining its sheen with care. Raw, unfinished concrete: This surface feels cool and gritty, developing a unique patina over time. Reclaimed, distressed wood planks: These feel rough and textured, gaining deeper character with age and wear. Industrial metal grate: This feels rigid and cool, showing its functional strength as it ages.
